Went for a walk today to explore the notion of symmetry in my images.

Shadows in the Suburbs: Photographing the Aftermath of Grenfell

There is a strange, unsettling quiet that drapes over a neighborhood in the wake of a tragedy.

In the days after Grenfell Tower fell silent, I found myself walking around the Shepherd’s Bush area with my camera. I wasn’t looking to document the news; the world’s media was already doing that. Instead, I wanted to capture the quiet, jarring uncanniness of the everyday spaces surrounding it.

It was still hard to believe. You walk down a completely normal, unassuming street—the kind of simple, quiet corner you see every day—and then you look up. There, standing in sharp contrast to the ordinary life below, is the stark, scarred silhouette of the tower.

The Uncanny Disconnect

These simple photos are an attempt to capture that exact feeling of “What is going on here?”

It’s the sheer contrast that stops you. Life doesn’t pause, even when something monumental and heartbreaking happens right next door. People still walk their dogs, cars still sit parked on the kerb, and the sun still rises. But everything feels slightly off. The mundane details of the streetscape take on a heavy, quiet weight.
